Population Size Estimation and Mapping of Three Key Populations in Eight Cities in Afghanistan in 2019

YHDO is implementing national study on mapping and size estimation of three key populations including, People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) in eight cities, Men with High Risk Behaviors (MHRB) in six cities, and Women with High-Risk Behaviors (WHRB) in eight cities of  Afghanistan, synthesize and extrapolate the findings to generate sub-national and national population size estimates of the three key populations, define the gaps in current services, and provide guidance for services needed including their locations.

YHDO acts as implementing partner working in partnership with  University of California San Francisco (UCSF) for implementation of the survey in Afghanistan.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Map and describe locations and typology of key affected population in Afghanistan

  • Estimate the population size and distribution of HIV key affected population in the eight cities with extrapolation to the provincial and national levels in Afghanistan in 2019

  • Map and describe the location of current services targeting these populations in the eight cities in Afghanistan in 2019

  • Identify the service needs and best locations for new services needed for these populations in the eight cities in Afghanistan

  • Develop recommendations to guide programs expansion and coverage improvements for HIV prevention and care for key populations in Afghanistan

  • Enhance local capacity to conduct mapping and size estimation among key populations at risk for HIV in Afghanistan
