Building the Capacity of Healthcare Providers and Health Facilities to Improve the Quality of Services Provided to Survivors of Gender-based Violence in Afghanistan

In 2014, WHO and the Ministry of Public Health launched Afghanistan’s first-ever GBV Treatment Protocol for Healthcare Providers. YHDO has been implementing capacity building program of health care providers on GBV treatment protocol in 14 provinces of the country. The project is funded by World Health Organization (WHO) for duration of 22 months. The Protocol contains detailed guidelines on how healthcare professionals can provide quality care for GBV survivors, including sections e.g. on survivor-centered care and communications, proper clinic set-up, identifying GBV and managing rape cases, wounds and burns. The main objectives of the project are:

  • Strengthen the capacity and skills of healthcare providers to provide good quality care to GBV survivors in Afghanistan according to the MoPH/WHO GBV Treatment Protocol in seven provinces in Afghanistan over two years.

  • Supervise and monitor healthcare providers’ and health facilities’ performance in providing good quality services to GBV survivors in order to strengthen capacity building activities and report back to WHO/MoPH.

  • Provide on-the-job training, mentoring and support to healthcare providers and health managers on managing GBV cases to enable the organization and provision of better quality care.

YHDO has commenced the 2nd phase of strengthening health response to GBV through capacity building of health care provider on GBV treatment protocol in 14 provinces of the country.
